Most of our work at Mission Performance involves helping organisations transition to a new business model.
They need to stay competitive, innovate, and meet changing customer needs. These transitions involve shifting from product-based to service-oriented models, embracing digitalisation, or adopting more sustainable practices. Such transitions are complex, affecting changes in operational processes and significant shifts in behaviour and skill sets within the organisation.
Our work helps them overcome the challenges associated with transition.
Three of these challenges and their antidotes are listed below:
1\. Cultural Resistance and Change Management:
One of the primary challenges in transitioning to a new business model is overcoming cultural resistance. Employees accustomed to established processes and workflows may resist changes that disrupt their routines. This resistance can stem from fear of the unknown, concerns about job security, or scepticism about the new model’s viability.
Antidote:
Invest in detailed design to understand frontline and shop floor environments and culture. Cross-reference this firsthand understanding with middle management and executive behaviours and expectations. Once the programs have been co-created, deliver them in partnership and be prepared to change based on what the audience needs at any given point in time.

2\. Skill Set Gaps:
Transitioning to a new business model often requires a different set of skills. For instance, shifting from a product-centric to a service-oriented model may demand more robust customer service capabilities, project management skills, and a deeper understanding of customer needs. In the case of digital transformation, technical skills such as data analytics, cybersecurity, and software development become critical.
Antidote:
Combine technical and behavioural training and align it to specific operational processes such as LEAN. When combined, behavioural and technical training effectively feeds early and sustained performance improvements, which help reduce resistance to change.

3\. Global Coordination and Consistency:
For global organisations, coordinating the transition across different regions poses an additional layer of complexity. Differences in local market conditions, regulatory environments, and cultural norms can make implementing a uniform business model globally challenging. Ensuring consistency in brand identity and customer experience while accommodating regional variations requires careful planning and execution.
Antidote:
Combine well-designed and engaging mass participative conference events with ongoing in-country training and support. This enables the messenger to deliver the right message credibly. In addition, targeted leadership development programs connected to these global engagement events will demonstrate positive executive support and intent and help reduce resistance to change.
