Since leaving the Marines as a Captain and taking his MBA, Gerry has become a specialist in turning businesses around. His particular expertise lies in improving performance through effective leadership and culture change. Since 1997, he has played a leading role, as Management Team member, Interim Manager and Consultant, in a number of large, integrated, strategic turnarounds and optimisation projects. He has further hands-on experience of creating and leading teams in numerous different contexts. He has worked with and coached leaders and teams at all levels in more than 30 companies in the manufacturing and heavy process industries, the service industry, and in banking, media, retail and FMCG. Examples of relevant experiences: • At Shell, led a core team of 30 and an extended team of over 300 in the 3-year transformation of an integrated 12,000 strong Southern European Oil & Gas provider covering all aspects of the business, including re-organisation, business planning & investments, performance management, HSE, maintenance processes, production optimisation, energy management, supply processes and distribution- and retail networks and operations. Led the programme through a re-focus resulting in delivering annualised benefits of $42 M after 18 months, and putting the programme on track to deliver the targeted $ 150 M. • As part of the company-wide transformation programme of a Shell Joint Venture partner in Africa, developed and delivered a Leadership Development programme to over 400 managers, covering key Leadership Behaviours and Skills, which consistently received very positive feedback, with an average score of 4.5 (5 being Outstanding), all participants recommending the programme to other senior leaders and regularly labelling it as “the best leadership programme ever” in feedback forms • At SourcingLink, as VP Business Development and Director Europe & Asia, led 15 projects and teams implementing e-commerce processes within large retail operations across 12 countries in Asia, Latin America and Europe, generating an aggregate bottom-line impact in excess of $250 M. • At Reuters, led a global team of 30 senior managers to create a new Division Gerry has written practical training materials, guidelines and models on a range of performance-related topics including ‘Leadership in Change’, ‘How to Change a Culture’, ‘Transformational Leadership Behaviours’, ‘Communicating with Front Line staff’, ‘Expectation Setting & Feedback’, ‘Improving Accountability & Compliance’, ‘Key Performance Indicators’ and ‘Change Management’ Gerry holds an MBA from London Business School and a BA in International Relations from the Royal Netherlands Naval Academy. He passed out top of his class for Officer Training. During his time as a serving officer, he received commendations from the Commandant General Royal Marines’ for outstanding performance whilst serving with the Royal Marines, as well from the Commandant General Dutch Marines for his role as Head of Training at a training base. He is fluent in English, Dutch and German and is conversant in French and Spanish In 2010 Gerry resigned from Shell to pursue his interests in Corporate Turnarounds, Social Enterprise, and Leadership Development. He is a non-executive Director of Sally Strachey Historic Conservation Ltd. He is married to Kim and lives on a farm in South West England. His leisure interests include hiking, sailing, running, reading, rowing and amateur dramatics |
